Hi there!
I'm not a blog writer, so I have no doubt that this may be a post of rambling thoughts.
Only a week into 2026 and it seems like there is already lots to report.
2025 ended with Mellie, aka "Stink" (Smelly Mellie) being crowned the #1 Beagle in Canada, #1 Beagle puppy (She turned a year in April) and #16 Hound.
So exciting for such a young girl who was shown on a limited basis.
Remember that old adage of "best laid plans' (hey that's a great name) well, when it comes to breeding dogs, be prepared to throw your plans out the window, have a back up plan, and then throw that out the window too.
This year we are breeding Keira and Celine, and they both came in season at the same time...as in right now!
The original plan was to breed Celine via frozen semen to the beautiful Anakin aka BISS GCH Maple Ridge Northern Lights except Celine had other plans, and has been bred to our own Matthew.
The plan had existed to get Celine out to try to obtain that elusive "major win" towards her Canadian title, but with her timing...that will be on hold until late summer/early fall. We do have plans to attend the National Beagle Club Specialty in Tennessee (depending on factors beyond our control)
Keira....for her last litter, I was prepared to breed her to the gorgeous BIS GCH Everwind Gone With the Wind aka Quenton. Keira wasn't expected to be in season until April, and Quenton winters in Florida...do you see where I'm going with this. Lately I've heard nothing but horror stories of chilled packages being held at the border, so on to plan B!
Plan B included flying her out to Nova Scotia to the lovely Pony at Shillington Beagles. Well ya gotta know that as soon as I thought that was a great idea, Mother Nature said "not so fast" and has blessed us with heavy snow all week!
Luckily, a lovely dog I co-bred lives 3 hours away! Rupert aka CH Branston TraJam Rules Don't Apply is a half brother to Freddie, making the pedigree of potential babies very similar to our Mellie.
We look forward to showing Mellie again this year, with early in the year babies, Mellie's lead will get handed over to Dillon Conod, who stepped in on occasion in 2025.
Wish my sanity good luck as we manouver puppies, shows and work!
